      For the two-thirds of Kenya’s population that rely on the food they grow and animals they keep, increasing drought can mean many struggle to produce enough food.

      We helped to address drought by teaching farmers techniques for conserving water and soil, and by making drought-tolerant crops available to them:

      • We created farmers’ groups and trained them to build new ridges and zai pits for capturing rainwater. The groups could then pass their new skills on to their communities.
      • We provided selected farmers with high-quality seeds for drought-tolerant crops, so that they could collect and store seeds from the harvest to use the following season.
      • We made these improved seeds widely available in the community to enable more farmers to grow healthy harvests.

      We worked with farmers in the Kitui area of eastern Kenya. In 2011, the sorghum harvest increased by 249%, helping people move away from food aid.
